US Senate blocks bill to sanction International Criminal Court

Following our earlier post about U.S. sanctions on the ICC, the US Senate on Tuesday, January 28, blocked a bill to sanction the International Criminal Court (ICC) for its arrest warrants against Israeli officials over the war in Gaza. Senators voted 54-45 on the “Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act,” falling short of the 60 votes required to prevail. This bill aimed to punish individuals involved in ICC investigations or prosecutions targeting U.S. citizens and allies, including Israel. Earlier this month, the bill passed the House of Representatives by an overwhelming margin, 243 – 140, in a signal of strong support for Israel. This decision reflects ongoing debates about the U.S. approach to ICC actions and their potential impact on international relations.
